Growth Mindset/Fixed Mindset Assignment
.) To have a growth mindset you have to believe in yourself and never tell yourself that you can’t do something. When something is hard it is important to not look at it as a negative thing but as an opportunity to grow more as a person. “Understanding that our abilities can be developed and being able to process, learn and correct” is what Carol Dwecks says it takes to have a growth mindset. When you have a more fixed mindset you tend to get stuck, come up with excuses and run from difficulty.
.) The first thing that Carol Dweck says that we can do is praise wisely not praising intelligence or talent but instead praising the process that kids engage in their efforts, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance and improvement. The second thing she says is that just the word yet or not yet gives kids greater confidence and persistence and that you can actually change mindsets with it.
.) To me dweck’s model of intelligence represents persistence and ability to take on new challenges with an open mind even though they may be difficult and take some effort.
.) A fixed mindset moment for me would be when in the third grade my teacher was trying to explain to me how a decimal moves and where it is placed. To me it just didn’t make sense why the decimal moves and where it goes. So after the teacher yelled at me that that’s just how the decimal works, I just always told myself that I couldn’t do it and never tried to learn it or practice it on my own after that until I had to. Another fixed mindset thing that I have is that I only write in cursive and I tell myself that I cant print. I mean obviously I can print it just looks reallyyyy bad but I bet if I just started writing in all printing and stopped cursive for a while i’m sure my printing would actually get better.
