What is a Soundscape?

  1. What’s a soundmark? Again, let’s use the term “landmark” as a kind of visual equivalent. Share a soundmark that is important to you, ideally one that would be recognizable to anyone with whom you have shared a soundscape. How might you capture that soundmark?

A sound mark is a noise, or it could be a song that is representative of a certain location or time. The first sound marks that automatically popped into my mind are the sound of the train that passed through my old hometown in California every night and the sound that my childhood ice cream man played as he drove through the neighborhoods. If I ask anyone who still lives in my hometown Simi Valley California (population of 125,975) they would know exactly the sounds I’m talking about. For a sound Mark, that would be recognizable to some people, not all I would have to say is the old universal intro, the one that has multiple movie clips including Jurassic Park and the Mummy, Jaws and several other classics. That audio just always means a lot to me because all of those movies were created during the time that my dad was in the industry and all of those movies I watched growing up when Universal still had that intro. Or one other one that might be a little bit more well known would be the old disney intro the one that begins with Jack Sparrow and Peter Pan’s voices .

  1. What are two sonic elements that stand out from the soundscape you chose to listen to as you read Guzi’s essay? Why do you think they stood out?

I’m not quite sure if I am understanding the definition of Sonic elements but from my understanding the sonic elements in the soundscape that I listened to from Guzis soundscape Utopia would be the flute and the harpe. Those are unusual sounds that are specific to that place/time/feeling and I think that those are the main sounds that give the soundscape the Utopia-like feeling if it was just the sounds of the animals and the stream the feeling of Utopia wouldn’t be as powerful in the soundscape and the sounds of the river and birds could represent a lot of different things that have nothing to do with Utopia.
