For the major exploration project students were instructed to Dig into published information about their majors, conduct guided internet and interview research, and develop an 8-minute presentation that describes and evaluates your major in terms of Ernest Boyer’s concept of the “enriched major” and the possible value of “vocational” elements in a degree. The main question that we were supposed to focus on in the presentation was In what ways is your selected major “enriched” and/or “vocational” in the ways that Ernest Boyer means? I had a lot of fun while doing this project. I think its very useful for everyone to take a deeper dive into their majors to discover how it will benefit them in their future careers. I also think allowing students to connect with other Faculty in their major is a really cool experience and probably my favorite part of the project. I met with Mr Habraken and asked him a series of questions about the major. It was a 20 minute long interview and I got some really good really eye opening information from it. I think this project is probably the thing that I am most proud of in this class I put a lot of time and effort into it and I hope that showed. In my presentation this is how I decided to break it up First slide was a Program overview were I provided a list of the required classes that Communications majors are required to take at UNE. For the second slide I talked about potential career applications and how the options seem limitless when you are a communications major. For the third slide I talked about similarities between the communications major and Boyers idea of an enriched major and Said that I do believe that the Communications major here at UNE is enriched just not in the way I need it to be. Then I went on to talk about the major takeaways that I gathered from my interview with Joe Habraken a best-selling author, information technology professional and educator at UNE. I broke the interview down to four main takeaways Number one Be in the mindset to build your own curriculum. Number two New opportunities that will arise for communications majors as the medical school transfers over to Portland Number 3 His definition of a successful student and Number 4 What he wants students to take away at the end of their four years. and finally for my last slide I talked about what the major is missing and why thats important I had a lot to say in this department.
