Soundscape #1 (Outdoor)

Soundscape #1 (Outdoor)

For my audio postcard I decided to take a tour through the Rachel Carson wildlife Refuge. I had never been there before and I remember learning about Rachel Carson last year and I wanted to learn more about her. I also love going to nature reserves so I wanted to check it out. When I walked along the trails of Rachel Carson’s nature refuge I tried to be as observant as possible to not only the sounds I was hearing but the visuals and the smells all around me as well. I was trying to take notice of anything I could potentially talk about for the podcast. I recorded the sounds of my footsteps in the mud and the leaves, I recorded the sounds of the birds chirping, I recorded the sounds of the planes flying above, and I recorded the sound of the water moving slowly throughout the marshes. When I was editing all the soundscape pieces together I decided that I wanted to give a narrative of who Rachel Carson was and what the refuge is and why it was established to help paint a picture for listeners. I got most of the narrative from the little pamphlets that I collected while I was at the refuge. Editing wise this podcast definitely took me the longest to edit of all the podcasts so far but I had fun doing it. I was having some trouble figuring out audio levels for this one but I eventually figured it out. Overall It was a good experience for me to learn a little more about Rachel Carson and go out and take a nature walk which is good for my mental health.
