Intro to Arts and Humanities

Official Course Description:

The Introductory Arts and Humanities Seminar introduces students to questions about the place of the arts, humanities, and communication in a life well lived, in the university, and in the broader society. How do we make sense of the world through art and literature? How does familiarity with history help us place current events in a meaningful context? What concepts and terms do we use to arrive at our moral, ethical, aesthetic, and religious values? How might we communicate that meaning and those concerns to others in oral, written, and visual ways? Students participate in small group work, regular reading and writing, engaging discussions, and campus events. Over the term, they develop an academic ePortfolio, where they collect, select, and reflect on their learning. Throughout the class, students work closely with faculty and peers to critically examine the place of the liberal arts in higher education, relate their own goals to the curriculum, and become active participants in the School of Arts and Humanities.

My Course Description:

Introduction to Arts and Humanities is a fun class I would definitely recommend to other students. Through the course of this class students will be asked to make personal goals for themselves, take a deeper dive into the Libral arts and why they are important and some of the misconceptions about the libearl arts majors and also to look closely at their own major and examine if it is vocational or not. Most classes we come in and have a discussion about the homework that was assigned for that day and then go over what is expected for the next class. Some classes we had different professors come in and teach us lessons and those were definitely some of my favorite days in class. Overall I think it’s a great class and I found it very useful to examine my major and the role of the liberal arts. Although this was the class that I had the most homework from everynight in my first semester so be ready for a heavy workload. I also found that most assignments took me way longer than the average time on task that is normally given at the top of the assignments but maybe that’s just me.
