Official Course Description:

This course provides the student with training and experience in researching, organizing and
presenting various types of oral presentations. Topics covered include audience analysis, speech
organization, delivery techniques, and the use of sensory aids. Narrative, informative, and special-occasion presentations are required. The instruction in this class, in large portion, comes
through discussion with the class and the instructor regarding specific speeches the student will
deliver.

Student Course Description:

This course allows students to figure out who they are as public speakers and what strategies work best for them while public speaking. We read certain sections in a book called a pocket guide for public speaking and this helped set us up for meaningful class discussions. We also learned how to give and receive feedback in a way that is respectful and efficient. Overall you learn different techniques about how to prepare and give speeches and this helps students grow their confidence and give speeches with clarity and precision.

“SPEECH 3: Special Occasion—What You Mean to Me:
The goal of this speech is to explain why someone is important to you. What are their strengths
and what have you learned from them? What should others know about this person? This
person could be a mentor, a friend, guardian, teacher, an expert in the field you are interested in
studying, or a role model. The speech may be given in the style of an introduction, a toast, a
commemorative, or a eulogy. (Think: how would the tone and approach differ?)”

So I decided to do my speech about my childhood dog that passed away my freshman year at college. She was a 3 pound tea cup Yorkie that we rescued when she was five. My dad named her Little Bit. She was my best friend and there is not a day that goes by that I dont think about her and miss her terribly. I really enjoyed doing this speech and reflecting back on the special bond that we shared. I also enjoyed being able to share her beautiful spirt with others and enjoyed being able to talk about her and her funny quirks. I was a lucky girl to find that dog in this life.
