Barclay Paragraph Practice
Do you really want a world with leaders (and their fingers) on the button, who don’t empathize? (Claim). In my opinion empathy is the most important leadership skill. It’s often said that people don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses, and it’s true in my experience. If your boss doesn’t care about you, or worse, actively sabotages you, it’s your sign to hit the exit. Don’t look back and don’t feel bad – we work to live, not the other way around. We get to choose our freedom. (introduction) “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.”(Doyle page 11/12) (Quotation One) This is very true when it comes to a workplace. A good leader should be looking out of the best interest of all individuals in the group and in order to do that they must have awareness, discipline and most importantly empathy. Leaders don’t have to be experts in mental health in order to demonstrate they care and are paying attention. It’s enough to check in, ask questions. Leaders can also be educated about the company’s support for mental health so they can provide information about resources to additional help. (Explanation) Maintaining an open mind as a leader or employee means you’re less likely to get stuck in a rut when going about your everyday business tasks. (Transition) “blind certainty, a close-mindedness that amounts to an imprisonment so total that the prisoner doesn’t even know he’s locked up” (Doyle page 3) (Quotation Two) this quote emphasizes the danger of close minded thinking. 2Being open-minded makes us more naturally inquisitive, which in turn makes is more able to better ourselves and improve our knowledge and understanding, day-by-day. It is always a good thing to welcome new ideas, arguments, and information that you typically do not align with. Open-mindedness is a positive character quality and it enables those who use it to think critically and rationally.(Explanation of the connection)
