  • 5What are some common themes/ take aways about creative process that are described in these different sources?

There is no right creative process. Everyone’s creative process is different and there is no right or wrong way to approach or think about it. The creative process is the process that an individual finds best helps them get their ideas and their creativity across. Whether that means to be hyper aware of your conscious and unconscious minds or not to be aware of them at all.  

  • What does Stephanie Kilgast mean when she says a project needs to “mature?”   

I think when she talks about doing her artwork and how she has to push her own boundaries artistically and  sometimes some things work and some things don’t, and when they dont she say the art “has to get worse and worse until they can get better” I believe this is what she’s referring to when she says project needs to mature. She says that art is messy and chaotic and that we must trust ourselves and trust the process. I believe taking a step away from a project and coming back to it with a new critical eye allows the project to mature.  

  • How does she speak about the subconscious being involved in the creative process?

She says that “it is not a very rational process but an emotional one and a manual one where the hands often work on their own.” She also says that “doing art is very organic you follow your guts” she says that she “ trusts her subconscious a lot and tends to actively go with the flow and what feels right at any given moment” she says that if something feels off that she will move on to another project and let her subconscious live in the background. She emphasizes  that everything that we see is analyzed by our subconscious and that our subconscious is always at work.  

  • William Kentridge speaks about the “midway line.”  What does he mean by this and how is this a necessary component to moving through an idea. 

He compares the art being produced in the art studios as a midway line or a point of a connection from the outside world to the artists in the studio creating the work. This is a necessary component when working through an idea because
